I always tell people the best part of traveling is the food. How amazing would it be to travel the world and just eat food? Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern, I envy you two.
Being in Japan, I’ve had so many opportunities to eat good food and not so good food. While yes, I am eating a lot (mostly) Japanese food, I do have opportunities to eat foods from other parts of the country. It’s interesting to see different countries’ take on foreign food. There are a couple “American” restaurants here in Mito which are basically just hamburger places. Despite being gluten intolerant, I do eat at most of them… I just have to eat a hamburger without the bun ?. I haven’t had too much Chinese food but they have it here. I don’t want to say what I had seemed more authentic. But I definitely wasn’t eating egg fu yung and all that American-Chinese food.
Not too long ago I went to a Spanish restaurant in Mito. People who are gluten intolerant or just avoiding gluten, I highly suggest going to Spain for some good food. I’m not 100% what I ate but almost every dish served didn’t have gluten in it so go in with an open mind. This meal, like all my other meals in Japan, consisted mostly of rice and seafood. Nevertheless it was still delicious and has me pining for foods I can eat only in my dreams where I go back home. But, it made me realized how recently, I haven’t been adventurous in food or everyday life. It’s strange how such a simple experience like going to a Spanish restaurant in Japan can really open my eyes and inspire me to challenge myself more. I guess that’s the power of good food.
So, with the new trimester coming up (or new school year for America) I am going to challenge myself and all of you to go out, be adventurous, and try different foods.
